Eurowatch - 7 September

Off the mark in Top 14
By Jason Harris September 7 2008
Bayonne made it three wins on the bounce at a soggy Stade Jean Dauger while just up the road Mont de Marsan notched up a first victory of the Top 14 Campaign. Over in Italy it was a disappointing final pre-seaon warm-up for an under-strength Viadana who failed to overcome second division opposition.

Les Bayonnais triumphed in the rain against perennial runners-up ASM Clermont Auvergne 17-6 on Friday night to make it three wins from as many games.

Fullback Julien Peyras's try five minutes from time sealed the win for the home side after former Kangaroo Craig Gower booted a first half drop goal to cancel out Brock James's opening penalty for ASM.

Manny Edmonds had a mixed night with the boot but he eventually found his range in the second half after a couple of misses in the frist, kicking three more goals to make it 12-3 before James narrowed the gap to 12-6.

Peyras then ensured that ASM went back home empty handed with his late score which took Bayonne up to second in the Top 14 table, ready for their trip to Catalunia to take on Perpignan next Saturday.

On Satruday, just up the N124, Mont de Marsan took a first win of their Top 14 campaign, shocking moneybags fellow-promotees RC Toulon 25-18.

Yet again Stade Montois could manage to cross the line just once, in the 32nd minute of the match, with young wing Jean-Baptiste Dubie scoring the try. The rest of the points came from the conversion, a drop goal and five penalties - one from half way - courtesy of scrum half Beñat Arrayet.

With development works continuing at Stade Guy Boniface, Stade have to play five of their first seven league games away from home and their next one is another road trip to Bourgoin on Saturday afternoon.

In Italy, Montepaschi Viadana coach Jim Love fielded a second-string line-up missing most of his foreign stars at Serie A outfit Termoraggi Piacenza and came away with a 19-19 draw.

Viadana went behind 7-0 early on but levelled the scores by half time with a try from flanker Puliti and conversion from former Scotland under-19 outside half Scott Curle.

Two tries in three minutes gave the Leones a 12 point lead early in the second period with blind side flanker Natale Duca and centre Roberto Tallotti crossing in quick succession, with Curle adding the conversion of the second try.

However, their oppontents fought back with two further tries and a conversion to tie the score with 10 minutes left to play, and that's how it finished.

The Super 10 begins next week and Viadana kick off their campaign in Venice, away at Casino de Venezia on Saturday afternoon.
