Howay Les Noirs: Saracens 44, Newcastle 14

JW’s N'castle Neutralised
By Neville September 23 2008
Ah Newcastle. Brown Ale of my increasingly distant youth. Lindesfarne!! I saw them live at the Colli in, what 1673 (? was it) and they were supported by a Peter Gabriel led Genesis for Chris-sake. They were big. So were Falcons under Squeaky and Lam in the late 90's. So were we. Once.

But reputations wax and wane, and in our case wane a little more. The late great Alan Hull's lads came to the Vic on 21/9 fresh from an apparently impressive Wilko inspired victory over the old men of Stains, and we were fresh from yet another defeat. 0-2 this year and a string of bad'ns stretching right the way back to a Christmas ruining loss at the Vic to Falcons in 07.
Were always improving aren’t we. We "improved" against Sale, allegedly. Would the new improved Sarries huff and puff their way to another flaccid loss or was that a flying pig I just saw. To be honest my long suffering son and I turn up more in hope than expectation and have done since Adam Powell was a lad.

Let’s do it gradually boys, I thought. For a start you could try "CATCHING THE BLOODY KICKOFF". Oh.... we did. Well done Kamelli. Never in doubt. Ahem.

Then Chris Jack steals their line out and, out of nowhere we are trying to play expansive rugby. Offloads, loads and loads of offloads, and Kev is innnnnn.....ooo….noo he’s not. But ‘eh good stuff. The ruck ensuing from the tap tackle of a try-bound Kev results in Newcastle killing the ball in front of their posts for the first of 432 times today.  Penalty to us and it’s 3-0. Good start. Watch ‘em drop the kick off.
But we don’t, in fact we didn’t drop anything all day. We attack and carry the game to Falcons.

After 12 mins an Adam Powell break leads to a penalty to us. Again I felt that Mr Richards could have played on but he’s the ref and if the ball is buried he shouldn’t. We kick for touch (I can’t read my notes here), and from the subsequent scrum they’re up in the front row. Penalty 6-0.
I have to say that Aguerro is having a hell of a good game against Hayman, and what about our line out! Top stuff.

We are very much on top (Bet we lose) and a spot of 7's leads to a penalty to us as Newcastle Kill The Ball (NKB) 9-0.

Ah that’s better; Glen panics in broken field possession and hospitals De Kock. They get a line out but take 15 mins over it. Their hooker is Andy LONG by name and nature. But to be fair, with 4 primary jumpers in our 8 where is he supposed to throw it? Anyway when he eventually gets round to it the throw isn’t straight.
Any way this is all going so well it’s faintly surreal, “Very enterprising and entertaining stuff " My notes say. Were on  top, they are  hardly a force, are being forced to tackle like crazy, and we have the edge in all facets off the game, Including grubber kicks by Cencus.

And now, 35 mins, Jacko puts in a lovely David Humphreys’ style touch finder. With our line out it’s a top ploy. If we pin ‘em into their 20 and nick their throw we’re in business. We do - and are treated to the rare sight of Jacko drop goal. One more penalty from wide out on the right and its 15-0 to us at HT

"I don’t feel comfortable yet" says the bloke on my left. Too true. We’ve seen leads that would be unassailable if held by other teams evaporate in 10 second half mins too often. Fifteen "schmiffteen", lets hope we score first...........and on several successive occasions over the next 40 mins.

In fact as we all know we did just that. First Kameli bursts through a ruck and is hauled down by a hairy Wilko inches from their line. Not long after, Chris Jack’s lovely touch line grubber allowed Kamelli a crack a charging down the attempted Tom May clearing kick, which he did with aplomb.

Jacko finds Kamelli with a deft cross kick in our 20. He is already outside his man but deftly chips the cover, gathers deftly and as he is tackled deftly feeds Kev who shows commendable if deft speed into the corner resulting in a deft and rather wonderful 80 metre try which exemplifies the marvellous ambition with which we are playing. That’s, let me see, 25-0 with Jacko’s kicking looking a little tired.

After 55 minutes passions in the Lower Rous run high, as 2 of our lads are taken out off the ball. Someone in office has seen the second offence, but my notes are silent as to result
Andy too Long is replaced by a chap called Thompson who is penalised for taking too LONG (Geddit!) over a line out

But now, gentle reader we come to the denouement.
Were hammering on their line and NKB in a try scoring situation,x2. Mr Davey has had enough x2 and its 15 plays 13.
Hugh barges over after taking a decent line from a trademark NDK crab and its 32-0

Replacements start to arrive. We’ve been playing at a hell of a pace. A searing break against a weakened defence by NDK is followed by a lovely pass threaded through the drawn cover to Rodd P, who has run a lovely support line and deserves the score, another little cracker.
And its gets better when Gordon Ross does a sort of a ‘Phil Bennett’ impersonation and Jinks through a very tired defence for a very popular touchdown 44-0.

Even I’m feeling less stressed now, but there is still time left. And in fact we do concede two l late tries by dropping our guard and losing our shape. It finished 44-14 and EJ will have something to say about the last couple of mins.

Kudos to the whole side. Andy Saull looks the business to me. Sliding smoothly along our defensive line to intervene when and where appropriate and secure ball like a proto Richard Hill. Adam Powell looks increasingly the class centre. Will AF command a place when fit. I could go on. Michael Owen was immense. Hugh is always immense and Census just IS immense.
Now we have to play with similar ambition constructed upon the securest of foundations if we get the chance V Stains and any other opponents we can dominate. We have to be consistent, but you can’t always chuck it about. And I trust that there is a plan B for Wasps and Leicester. Or for when it rains a lot. In fact, I bet there is.

As for Sunday, that is more like it boys, and very well played indeed.

Nice one Neville almost as much as a joy to read and remember as it was to watch!

Have to say I think Michael Owen has been immense all season what a buy! Hopefully Warren Gatland won't notice!

Almost exactly the words that my long suffering daughter said to me after about 50 minutes. She still has nightmares about the Bath match. I hope that Sarries don't revert to 'TV' form on SKY next weekend.

Thanks Neville, lots of fun to read.

Nice report - I was once the oldest living Geordie never to have seen Lindisfarne (even though one of them worked for my Dad!) but rectified it at the Great British Beerfest a few years ago.

As for the Andy Soooo-Long re-throw, it was pefectly straight but Mr Richards suddenly realised he should have had him twice for delaying the game and rectified his mistake nicely. I love the quote in the preview on the Falcons board about Long finding his men rather well this season and how they'd take our lineout apart.

By the way, was Kev's try "deft" by any chance winking smiley

The exact quote from my preview was:

Quote:
Dr. B.
Jack, Borthwick and Vyvyan will cause mischief in the lineout, but with Andy Long seemingly hitting a decent run of subtle lineout throwing, there should be little cause for concern with our skinny lads well able to rise and secure possession for the men wearing Cotton Traders.

Note the use of the word 'seemingly' and the tongue-in-cheek nature of the whole preview. I refuse to take rugby too seriously, just like my writing style!

Great game to watch on Sunday, even from a Budgies fan; you looked like a team who can challenge with all hope for the top places this season.

Very enjoyable although Mr Richards does become Mr Davey at one point!

thank you one and all. You are all fine judges of the printed word.

Zoot, if you heard Lindesfarne less than 30 years ago we are talking about chalk and cheese, unfortunately.

Phillfez. I saw a young chap with an expensive looking digital SLR just in front of me in Lower rous M. You are Chalky White and I claim my £5.

Hope you are right Dr B, but I do fear for your lads

Sorry Darraghgirl, but a Rose by any other name is still ref

lets hope we all feel this happy on saturday
