Rush Targets Early Return

Rush Targets Early Return
By Andrew Collins August 4 2008
Cardiff Blues talisman, Xavier Rush, says he should be back in action in time for the Heineken Cup, Millennium Stadium showdown with Gloucester on October 19th. The Kiwi number eight also hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a return before that match, with Sale in the EDF Cup, or Calvasano away as the Blues kick off an important month.

Xav told CardiffBlues.com,

"The operation went well and better than expected if I'm being honest. They smoothed over some of the cartilage and cleaned out the knee. The Surgeon, Rhys Williams, was very positive and I hope to be back earlier than expected probably in late September or early October."

It means that the Blues should have their inspirational captain in time for the big Heineken date with Glos. It's a huge relief to fans, who originally expected to be without Rush until Christmas, when news broke about his knee injury which he sustained in training.

Should the recovery be successful, Xav will have only missed Magner's League games, although in truth, he may well not be risked for Sale or Calvasano. Below are the fixtures until the end of October,

Of course he'll be risked for one of either Sale or Calvisano.

There not going to chuck him in against Glocester for his first match in 5 and half months!

Well im not suggesting that. Don't you think he'll be used by CRFC for a few games first, like all other injured players making their come back do?

The likelyhood is, he won't play aginst Sale BECAUSE he will be featuring in the WP. May then be on the bench for Calva.

Agree about Sale as that is a must win game and will be high intensity.

Not sure weather he can play for the RFC because he is a foreigner. Correct me if im wrong but have any of the NWQ's played for the black and blues?

With all due respect I can see him playing 60-80 mins against Calvisano. If he isn't fit to play and start against Calvisano i can't see him being able to cope with the intensity of 80 mins against Glos.

we're going to need him for 80 against glos

According to Ceefax Xav is out for 6 weeks maximum that means he should be fit by mid September so there is no reason if that is the case he can't play against Connaught on the 28th as a warm up and against Sale the week after. That may be pushing it though because as has been said he won't of played for 5 months or trained because of his injury.

I can't see Rush playing in the WP to regain his fitness. He didn't two years ago and it would be madness to put a player of his quality in the WP.

A WP game and then Calvisano would be my preferred route.
