Zippy's Player Ratings - Wales vs Australia
By Zippy September 16 2007
Player ratings for Wales 32 - 20 defeat against Australia in there second game in this years Rugby World Cup at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. The result means that Wales will have to win there 2 remaining games to qualify for the knock out stages.

15. K Morgan (6) - Quite odd he wasn't selected given his consistency, solid when he came on but we don't use him enough in attack.

14. M Jones (7) - Came looking for work and did well, his best game in some time, still not getting quality ball.

13. T Shanklin (4) - A long way 2nd best to Mortlock.

12. J Hook (5) - Had a chance to redeem his genius and whilst playing ok never showed any brilliance.

11. S Williams (8) - World class, dangerous and gets tries, one of our big time players who didn't let us down, Wales MOTM.

10. S Jones (4) - Outplayed by a 15 year old, if he had kicked his kicks Wales would have been in the game and not had to go for a miracle comeback, kicking from hand was off.

9. D Peel (4) - Kicking off, the shouts for Phillips get ever stronger.

8. J Thomas (7) - Very good game, carried well in the open and tackled all day, not sure why he doesn't work at his tight carrying to become more of an all rounder.

7. M Williams (3) - Awful, played off the park by Smith.

6. C Charvis (6) - The only member of the starting back row to challenge the Aussies, should be rested until Fiji or even the 1/4s.

5. AW Jones (6) - Keeps on impressing, we need him to carry more.

4. I Gough (5) - Tough, uncomprimising, unspectacular.

3. A Jones (6) - Ref didn't give him the chance to give Dunning the screwing he deserved. Established first choice.

2. M Rees (5) - In and out of the game, the line out was ok but some suspect throwing.

1. G Jenkins (7) - Most impressive member of the fron row, defended manfully, could have done with some more carrying.

Subs of note:

Alfie lasted only 20mins but it was lively, a horrible tackle on Barnes took a horrible tackle from Mortlock and played in 2 different positions, will be a big loss.

Popham - has to play cause Wales need his physical presence.

Owen - Few moments of class, perhaps a player we need to use in the last 20mins of games?

Australia Stars:

Mortlock was MOTM in the 40mins he played, Barnes looked like a carbon copy of Larkham and Smith was everywhere.

Overall Comments:

It was over at half time, Wales didn't come out like it was a major rugby world cup game and we don't have a game plan for the first 60mins of a game because our current one doesn't work against organised defences.

The referee ruined our best chance of getting into the Aussies at the scrum and the way he protected there front row was shocking and even gave them decisions.

Thats probably it for the world cup, as long as we don't get shocked by Fiji we'll prob end up playing the Boks and the game will follow the same pattern as this one with us losing by a few more.

I'm not going to write much else, feeling a little numb.
