Spear Tackle
By Kath 8/9/07 September 8 2007
England vs USA Match Preview 8th September 2007. What an bloody awful display of Rugby from the defending Rugby World Cup Champions. Well if you are American you will be very happy bunnies tonight but if you are English you will be a wringing your head in despair.

IRB Rugby World Cup - 8th September 2007

 England vs. USA (Pool A)

Match Review

Well if you are American you will be very happy bunnies tonight but if you are English you will be wringing your head in despair.

What a bloody awful performance from England (the so called defending Rugby World Cup Champions) - HasBeens more like!  I have never watched a more depressing game from an England team in all the time I have supported the national side.

Boring, Slow, Clueless, No Shape, Pedestrian, Ball Handling skills non existent.  Absolute rubbish and embarrassing to watch.

England were ordinary and frankly we have now found their level of play.   This is not to take anything away from the USA who played the full 80mins and kept at England.  They deserved their points and well done to them.  The only one blight was the spear tackle on Barkley and to be honest I really don't think that was intentional, it was not that type of game.

With respect to Barkley I thought he was outstanding, his breaks, his try and his kicking ( who needs Wilkinson was my thoughts during the match).  Of course we do need Wilkinson but Barkley is now on a par and surely must take England forward now in the future.  Barkley for me was my man of the match.

Englands Olly Barkley scores a try
England's Olly Barkley - going over for the TRY

The match itself points wise, was made up mostly of penalties and a couple of tries from England but honest to God that was an awful performance by England, they looked tired, did not seem to have a game plan and the passing was woeful.

I can imagine what the rest of the rugby world must be thinking about England now, especially the Springboks who must be delirious with laughter.

What a Joke - England Are

and they will be right, let me laugh along with you guys and girls, before I weep into my Gin and Tonic.

I have seen better matches in the Northumberland Counties 3rd Division.

Dear God where do we go from here...... we are already in the shit!

Final Score England 28 - 10 USA

But cant see it being any more than a cricket score against England!!(Sm123)

Tyke it to the limit : at the time I could not think of a better description, as I slugged away at the Gin and Tonic.

God how awful was that game - I am still very angry. My hubby says it is only a game but if you are a proud Englishman/women that bloody hurts.

Anyone fancy doing the next match preview and review before I commit harry carry(Sm57)

Not even a bonus point, could that come back to haunt us? From what I saw (not the first 25 minutes or so) we were rubbish, the handling of the whole team was some of the worst I've ever seen. If I was Ashton I would be sh1tting my self over the prospect of Samoa let alone South Africa.

Well partly a true statement, I agree a poor performance (a subjective assessment) but England ARE the defending champions - of that there can be no debate so why dispute it? Get behind your team rather than just complaining at this critical time.

Re: England vs USA Match Review - RWC 8th Sept 2007
Never been so torn....England, my heart since 1970-something were dire...it was like the 70's and some of the 80's all over again.

But from the US side of things it was a good result (not great...great would have been winning which i thought was possible if there had been a little more time). The USA has the population, winning mentality, skill base etc and thus the potential to be world champs in future years but need results to push forward. (Havng players related to Murray Mexted must help too!)

Faz despite his break is too slow and still makes poor forward passes, Chuter...well he was Chuter in the line out.

And that's a thing what has happened to our lineout play?

Few bright spots...Barkley hopefully is now fully realizing his huge potential. Rees, a true open side....and erm..well...erm..oh yes..I thought our physio got on the pitch pretty quick to look at Barkley

with the notable exceptions of lewsey, barkley and rees that was absolutely abject. Too many forwards non existant in the loose (was worsley playing?) very wobbly lineout (the boks will make mincemeat of that setpiece) a scrumhalf confirming he should be no where near the international game and a fullback confirming he is a good winger. It just goes from bad to worse for England and the sooner they can start rebuilding the better.

PhilH : Typical of a Wasp to pick up on a error of statement

I have supported England, the team through think and thin and still do.

However, I am not blind and that was a dismal performance from the (THE WORLD CHAMPIONS).

Having said that I will be supporting and shouting for them on Friday.

Re: England vs USA Match Review - RWC 8th Sept 2007
Maybe now our ruler realises why some of us wanted England to lose a game badly last year, so that we would see the back of a certain Mr. Robinson. But no, we were dismissed as heretics, who should have been strung from the nearest lamp-post.

We only narrowly lost the game in question (Ireland at Twickenham), so we had a further 8 months of going backwards, before Ashton was belatedly brought in to salvage something from the wreckage of over two years of Robinson. Every day that Robinson stayed in the job, our chances of retaining the trophy diminished, and the likelihood of performances like yesterday's increased - but some of the diehards maintained that it was a disgrace that anybody should want short-term pain to help bring long-term comfort. Would a 30 point thrashing have been worth it, if we'd gone on to become a good side again? For me, yes. For others, clearly no. Failure to plan for the long term guarantees failure.

Yesterday's shambles might still have happened, had Ashton been in charge for a couple of years, but I doubt it. He had less than a year to repair a sinking ship, and he wasn't helped by the ridiculous administrators who deemed that the Heineken Cup and ECC finals should clash with an England tour.

Still, look on the bright side - in 1999, USA scored 19 points against the eventual winners, including the only try they conceded in the tournament.

Just because some of us put club first doesn't mean we don't care about the national side.

Kath,

Without wishing to get involved again (but I fear I must), what, as moderator of this forum, where you doing making an entry such as you did above: "PhilH - God forbid NO!

There is only one Barney Burnham, One Barney Burnham, only one Barney Burnham"
?

Now, I know you put a smiley at the end of your entry and, as often has been the case recently, the smilies are not working. Yes, I know Barney can be pedantic and even abrasive. You know this as well. I can not understand why you put that posting on. Did you think he would not reply to it in kind? For heaven's sake you are editor/moderator of the board. In the end you have to decide whether to be a moderator or a contributor. You can not do both if your contributions are confrontational.

Please do not take exception to this posting; it is meant to be sensible words of advice.

addendum: You should have said something like "No. There is no one who compares to Barney." It makes a point; but is that point negative or positive? The reader can decide for him, or her, self. It is much more difficult to take exception to it, even for Barney.

I realise you don't agree with how I moderate and that is fine.

The comment was tongue in cheek don't go making more of it than it is.

And as you pointed out the smiley was there for all to see.

I leave my love with as well winking smiley

Come on Barney - you made such a huge thing about Mr Betson - how about your assessment of the cynical trip by Vickery... it's not like you to be shy!

No I thought not...

Good write up Kath.

I'll keep supporting my national team because unlike some I don't take delight in making pointless stances.

Come on England!

Claire - if you visit the Wasps board, you'll find the following was posted last night (by me):

"The Vickery trip was bad, and he deserves to be cited. However:

a)it was very out of character, unlike the trips perpetrated by Mr Betsen
b) luckily, it did not cause serious injury, unlike one of the trips perpetrated by Mr Betsen

Had it been spotted, he should have got yellow. Red would have been very harsh, since the spear tackle on Barkley only resulted in a yellow."

Am I expected to copy everything I write on the Wasps site to here? Since management has said that she has no interest in anything I say, I'm not sure whether it's worth the effort. (Sm14)

You know what Barney whilst you continue to insult the Editor of this board, I don't care what you do. You weren't so careful about where you posted when Betsen committed his crimes.

Either way he shouldn't be seen in a white shirt for a while.

Remind me of Betsen's punishments for his serial tripping.

Note to self - the word 'management' is seen as insulting.

Note to Kath - the verb is 'breathe', the noun is 'breath'. I have absolutely no objection to your breathing. In fact, I'd thoroughly recommend breathing to anyone who wishes to continue living.(Sm13)

It's a rather extreme (but completely typical) response to a bit of mickeytaking, to suggest that I would rather you were dead.

Re: England vs USA Match Review - RWC 8th Sept 2007
Kath,

With all, due respect putting a smiley on does not always alter the tenor of a posting. I could illustrate my point, but doing so will serve no purpose.

I have to say I did not watch the England game. have I said this already here? If I have I apologize for repeating it. No, I went up to Beverley to watch Caldy play there. That is not strictly true. I went up to take some photographs and more importantly to meet up with some of the Beverley members. Caldy won 45-20, but the score was a little flattering to us. The England game was on, but the odd few snatches I saw convinced me that maintaining and developing friendships with a great little club was infinitely more important. Had the game been a real 'grabber', I am sure we would all have watched it.

I have got it recorded and I shall watch it sometime; maybe Monday, maybe in a week or two but maybe not for a year or so. And yes I do think England matter, but I do feel personal relationships matter more; certainly more than the vicarious thrill of supporting a winning team. I hope England do well. However if (when) England lose, as long as the players have done their best, I shall not be too bothered. Such is life, and as our Latin master used to say, "worse thing happen at sea". Beverley lost a game yesterday, but won far more.
