Edgy Leeds Topple Plucky Titans

Grass? Here?!?!?
By Peter Creek September 21 2008
On a beautiful sunny afternoon, on a verdant pitch both sets of supporters were treated to a superbly orchestrated performance where all the players were in tune and their timing was impeccable. Yes, this was the Deepcar Brass Band in full flow. What came after was somewhat less inspiring.

The Carnegie management had put out a strong team on paper but they were up against a Roth team whose enthusiastic play belied their lowly league position. Indeed after the Doc had spurned an early penalty chance the home 10 kicked his side into an early lead. Alberto, bless him, made amends with the first try, bursting through some shoddy defenders to score close to the sticks plus the extra 2 points for 7-3. Leeds went further ahead when Hendrie Fourie burrowed through from close range. With the ‘Negies 2 scores in front they took their foot off the gas (again) and Roth were unlucky to have a try disallowed. Another penalty for Roth left the score 17-6 to Leeds at halftime. The first half performance from Leeds had been error strewn with too much possession kicked away or lost in the tackle. Roth had their 8 binned just before the break and it looked as though the second half would be a bit one sided. Little did we know.

Welding had taken a knock before the break and was replaced by Armstrong. When Leeds finally spread the ball wide Scud was on hand to score in the corner. Roth added a penalty and then their enterprising play paid off when a missed tackle allowed the centre to crash over in the corner for 22- 14. The home side now had their tails up and went for the jugular, the no. 7 squeezing in under the posts. 22-21 with Roth now rampant- one felt that if they scored again Leeds would be beaten. What happened next? Leeds score against the run of play via Big Mac. The Doc missed yet another conversion. As Rotherham tired after their sterling endeavours Johnny Hepworth began to find space and one splendid run saw him feed Scud for his second try in the corner. The Doc finally found his form and kicked a beauty. Hendrie Fourie, the best player in the Leeds team for the third consecutive week muscled his way over for his second and the Doc wrapped it up with the conversion.

Why Leeds played so badly in parts with only glimpses of their real potential I do not know. Certainly the lads were over eager at times, complacent at others. Rotherham played their hearts out and on this showing will cling to mid-table. The Leeds Carnegie side has yet to play well this season but when they do someone will get a right tonking. In the meantime I take comfort in that I can honestly say that I have seen grass growing on Clifton Lane!

Verdant grass on the pitch, blazing sun and a brass band to boot!

It were "reel reet Sarrf Yarkshere" at it's best.

A very accurate report. We were only good in small parts and quite why Rotherham haven't won a match yet is a bit of a mistery. I have no doubt they will do soon and will probably survive Division 1.

I particularly liked their South African winger Errie Classens. He played a fine match and showed some wonderful skills. He should go far in the game.

Maybe next week, we can get it all together..........?

Up the Carnegies !

Good report, but I don't think Roth were unlucky to have a try disallowed. This makes out the ref made a wrong decision, he didn't.

Roth were unfortunate not to be rewarded for a great move, but the cover tackle by Leeds which lead to the Roth player knocking on was top drawer.

Good and fair report again Peter. If Roth think they are playing Leeds every week, then they will win games on this showing, but if they think lesser teams will be easy now, then they will continue to struggle.

bit short for an official page, but fare enough. I have to agree if they continue to play like that they will climb the league, only the roth fans know if they have been that comited in previous games

Re: Edgy Leeds Topple Plucky Titans
Think Peter is being very generous. Not seen Leeds make so many basic errors, miss as many tackles or cough up silly turnovers for a good while (Fourie excluded who was excellent).
Roth are nowhere as strong as before, we are supposedly stronger but they played with the passion & grit we showed on many occasions last year.
Listening to Backy's post match interview think someone should point out to him that creating space is one thing but in order to use that created space a pass would possibly be in order !!!!

If we had played like we did yesterday against a GP side we would have got absolutely destroyed.

Very poor performance 3 out of 10.

Envy, it was a tongue in cheek remark, because in my opinion its the regular repetition of these basic errors that we all find so frustrating. Like you say we get away with it in ND1, but we won't next season.

And also a very good match report too thanks for that

Some say he has a Tykes flag with team signatures on.
Others say that he's doing the same to the Carnegie flag,
All we know is that he's called Leeds carnegie signed flag.

Thanks Peter. It sounds like we played for the usual 20 minutes out of 80, but good to see we over came our bogey team. Well done lads, someone will get a real beating soon.
