The Bees Dirt-Trackers Gang

Birmingham & Solihull have started the Dirt-Trackers Club, a midweek volunteer work party, to carry out necessary maintenance work around their grounds at Portway and Sharmans Cross Road. The Dirt-Trackers, named after the midweek team fielded on tour by the British Lions, meet every Wednesday morning at 9.30 and spend three hours painting and renovating the dressing rooms, club house and sponsors facilities and their only reward is a pie and a pint at lunchtime. Lawrence Grove, Birmingham & Solihull's chairman, said: "Understandably much of the attention in a rugby club is focussed on what happens on Saturday afternoon but a lot of voluntary help and support goes into making a successful club. "We have set up the Dirt-Trackers to support the playing staff by working to maintain and improve our facilities and they are already in the process of giving the changing rooms at Sharmans Cross Road a facelift. "It's purely voluntary labour and the majority of those involved are retired gentlemen and former servants of the club. All they get for their efforts is a pint and a spot of lunch after three hours of hard work." The Dirt-Trackers are led by former club chairman Mike Norman and they include Trevor Woolley, a long-serving former RFU committeeman, former Birmingham first team players Billy Harris and Nigel Bell and former Bees president Brian Clayton among the volunteers. New Dirt-Trackers are welcome and anyone interested in supporting Birmingham's leading club should contact Mike Norman on 0121 430 7064.
