The
Pertemps Bees/South Birmingham College Academy won the West Midlands Colleges
ten-a-side tournament at Worcester College.
The Bees/South Birmingham College Academy defeated Worcester A 7-5 in the final
of a tournament which involved seven colleges from across the West Midlands.
"It was a fantastic achievement, particularly because apart from one player
everyone was a year younger than their opponents," said Ben Harvey, the Bees/South
Birmingham College coach.
"We played five games and conceded only one try all day. We scored 14 tries
ourselves and I must make particular mention of Brad Churchill. He's a very quick
winger who travels down from Shrewsbury every day.
"He has shown great attitude and he scored some good tries for us in the
tournament.
"It's the first tournament the academy has won and the students are naturally
proud of their achievement. It is a reflection of the enormous hard work they
have put in all season."
The pioneering academy, which offers youngsters specialist rugby training combined
with vocational courses, was launched last year and has an initial intake of 24
students including Tom Hardwick, the son of former Moseley and Royal Navy prop
Tim.
The next trials for places on the academy next season will be held at Portway,
the Bees training ground, on May 23 at 7pm.
