Tom Little’s Terrace Verdict: Launceston v Cov

Launceston 17 Coventry 29. On a bright fresh Cornish day Coventry continued their winning ways, with a hard fought victory over a dogged and resolute Launceston side that were fighting for their National Division 1 survival. Playing against a fierce wind Coventry overcame a nervous 10 minutes to play some attractive attacking rugby.

An excellent break by Nathan Jones was carried on by Darren Clayton that resulted in a maiden try for hooker Chris Whitehead.

The CAB's fought back strongly earning a close in try to level the score at 5-5.

Hard work by the Coventry pack produced a try for prop Carl Rimmer, which was duly converted by Ronnie McClean to make the score 12-5. 

A further Laurie McGlone try materialised in injury time, following a break from the 25 meter line, McClean claimed the extra two points with a conversion, to take Cov into the break with a well deserved halftime score of 19-5.

Within 5 minutes of the restart the game was effectively won for Cov, with a fourth and bonus winning point try by Nathan Jones, following his excellent break from the 25 meter line. The try was again converted by McClean making the score 26-5.

A yellow card then followed for Chris Whitehead, during which time CAB scored another close in try to move within 16 points at 26-10.  In the 52 minute Cov gained a penalty inside their own half which McClean duly placed the ball between the posts to move Cov 9 points clear at 19-10.

With Chris Whitehead coming out of the sin bin Coventry were back to full strength, but they had to fight off wave after wave of CAB pressure that was mainly located in their own 25.  Cov held out heroically until an injury time close in try by CAB made the score 29-17.

There followed a further 10 minutes of injury time but Coventry continued to defend resolutely and fully deserved their bonus point win, which in reality relegates CAB to National Division 2 rugby.

Overall a satisfactory away win against a strengthened CAB side, who never gave up even though they were under pressure in the scrums from a heavier pack.  Cov managed to pinch at least 4 lineouts and a scrum against the head.  It was another fine team effort, with excellent work from Laurie McGlone, Chris Whitehead, Myles Dorrian and my man of the match Nathan Jones.

And finally, well done to the hardy group of Cov supporters who made the long trip, they must have felt they were richly rewarded.

I have to agree with the previous posts, Aggie has really motivated the team, what a difference it makes having someone with a proper rugby pedigree as oposed to someone who sat on the bench for Henly 2nds.If AG has any sense, and so far there has been scant evidencs, he should do what has tobe done to secure Aggi for next season, the club has this squad for one more year, Aggie seems to be getting the best out of them, so let him have next year to see what he can do in a full season

And if things dont go well for Coventry next season and on this seasons performances there has to be doubt. Will Aggy have to leave the club. Aggy has been a part of Coventry Rugby Club sinse Noah roamed the planet. It would be a disaster if he should leave because the team dont have Cov blood in thier veins. I doubt Aggy would want to take the job on permantly.
Thats just my thoughts on it.

I sincerely apologise Tom it was an editing error by yours truly. The only reasons I can offer are:

I performed the editing task very early this morning, I’m now over 50 years of age, I’m a male (well I was last time I looked), I have a demanding wife and I wear glasses, which I had inadvertently forgotten to wear whilst editing.

Its not a case of being bitter Tom, its just such a shame to see a truly great club in the hands of AG. He should stop interfearing in team selection and let people who know about the game do what they were hired to do. It also surprises me that he got into discussions with Maynard re coaching the club. Thank fully he took the advice of others who had a better grasp on the situation. It seems he stumbles from one bad decision to another.

thanks dave i didnt know whether it was me or you,it was so late when i posted and also i am far older than you.(Sm100)

As for Covfan you blind hatred of AG is wearing thin,I realise why you cannot say who you are for obvious reasons(although i have guessed),but i think some of the intemperate language without knowing all the facts or ignoring the facts is really too much.
As for Aggy as Ron says does he really want it and for what it is worth AG does hold Aggy and Gully in high regard.the other scerario is the impact of any new DOR on the coaching staff,will he want to bring in his own coach or will continuity be insisted on .I suspect i know the real answer which may surprise Covfan.

I suspect Ton that the answer is Money, changes will be expensive, there is a squad in place for next season, a squad which needs only one or two new players, a squad that has beaten teams above them in the table, a squad, which had it not been for one or two unlucky decisions could have been much higher that they currently are. Its not all doom and gloom. I know you have an agenda Tom, and are manangment biased, i have been a supporter of this club for almost 30 years now,man and boy, Cov born and bred, i am calling it as i see it. AG is a different fish that the previous one, however, i did see the previous incumbent play, i cant say that about the present one. COME ON COV

Congratulations to the whole playing side of the club good result, they beat plymouth at home and were obviously motivated by the fight for survival in ND1 we all know how that feels.

The positves are as I have stated previously the squad is coming together, we now can look forward to a good season next season knowing most the squad will be with us.

Negatives, this air of forboding still hanging over the Club re all the gossip, rumour fact will we still be here who knows? the playing side looks positive with a few positions strengthened, the existence not so hmm

sorry magwitch i dont want to embarrass Covfan but if i have worked it out without inside knowledge i am sure others can do so.I do not intend to get involved in a persoanl vendetta.
the rugby side which most of us are really interseted in is showing much improvement and we should be more positive on that front for next season with some judicious strengthening.
