Spy in the Camp - Otley
By Frank Stormont October 2 2008
Albion make the long trip to Otley this weekend in a hope to record their first away win of the season. The pundits will probably be given the match to Albion but each match has to be won. Meanwhile the Ladies are at home to Old Albanian Saints and Warriors hae their match against Newbury called off at lunch time on Wednesday.

Sunday 2pm

5 Matches in and Albion are sitting 9th in the table and still to play Leeds, Bedford and Chiefs. With a number of injuries already in the season the team will be looking for the return of James Owen and hope that Liam is also fit to take his place in the starting line up. Whilst Gareth has been playing well at 2 he works even better at the back of the scrum.

According to This is Plymouth James Tideswell will be out for a while but that could see the return of Ryan to the side as he will not be required for the Warriors as their match against Newbury was called off at noon on Wednesday.

Otley have failed to pick up a win this season and if they want to stay in a league that next season may contain just 12 teams they will need to pick up a few wins. Albion have not won since 13th September when they won at home against Manchester 47 points to 6 have still to win away from home.

This being one of the longest trips of the season will probably have limited support from the touchlines although with gates averaging of under 600 it will still be more than the 320 that arrived at Monks Lane just 2 weeks ago.

In terms of discipline Otley have already seen 4 yellow cards to Sean-Michael's one. Only 4 of the penalties awarded against them have resulted in three points, but with 27 tries (2nd highest in league) against them I expect that the favoured option would be to attack for a try.

RECENT MEETINGS

With Otley spending a season in NL2 it has nearly 2 years since the two teams have met but of the last 4 meetings Albion have won all but one.

Of  15 that started in December 06 only 4 remain at Albion with a further 2 of the replacements.

With the skies clearing for the match and the sand down the west side of the pitch Albion played well for 70 minutes playing a wide game with the whole team playing their part in the moves.

Sila & Francisco made their starting debuts and Sila rewarded the club by scoring his first try under the posts in around 5 minutes.

Tactical replacements around 15 minutes of the second half with all bar Scott used, but with Sila down the only replacement left was Scott who came on and played at flanker with Danny moving out to centre.

The last ten minutes allowed Otley to run in 3 tries and claim a bonus point.

Full report to follow.

This must be one of the best starts to the season for some time after 4 games 2 points clear at the top and the only side to have won every game. The team may feel as though they are on the top of the world, or at least top of the league but as Graham Dawe said on BBC Radio Devon the only time to look at the league tables is after the last game of the season.

With tries for Richard Oxley, Colin Stewart, Wihan Neethling and Tom Hayes and 16 points from the boot of Wihan it brings his own personal tally to 48 of the 115 points in the league for the team so far.

The Ladies will be playing on the main pitch on Sunday with kick off 2pm. Plying against Old Albanian Saints they will have to step up a gear to pick up a win.

They have a number of returning players and a couple of new players to add to the team that almost made it against Richmond 2 weeks ago.

The ladies will be looking for a had physical match but expect to make OAS work hard for any points. Saints have proved to be a bit of a banana skin for Albion and have always managed to come out on top even if it has been by only a few points at times.

One thing is sure and that is you will see some great open play !

The ladies play in Championship south which is level two rugby, the equivalent level to the men's side.

The Ladies squad have very limited financial support from the club this season so a good presence would be greatly welcomed. If they have programmes like they did against Richmond please put your hands in your pockets.

If you know of any person or company that are willing to sponsor the team in a small or big way please contact Sonia Clatworthy on 07977 092 014. Everything will help towards the cost of away trips and other on going costs.
