Connacht sign Glasgow winger Mike Roberts
By Sea_point July 7 2008
News announced today on the official site say that Connacht have singed 26 year old former Wasps & Glasgow winger Mike Roberts. In the official statement it states that Roberts during his time with Wasps picked up three Premiership winners medals and one Heineken Cup winners medal. Hopefully this is an indication of current ability and not former...

According to the official website Connacht have signed former Wasps and Glasgow Warriors winger Mike Roberts for the new season.

Mike Roberts - Winger

The former Heineken Cup winner is looking forward to the season ahead and has enjoyed the past few weeks training with his new teammates.

"I'm delighted to have joined Connacht and am looking forward to the start of the season," the 26 year old said.

"I already knew Mike McCarthy from school and with Wasps and he was influential in my signing. He told me about the set-up here and about Michael Bradley's style of coaching and it sounded like something I'd be very interested in becoming a part of."

Roberts, who won three Premiership titles in England with Wasps, as well as a Heineken Cup medal, has already settled into training in Galway.

"Since arriving training has gone really well, there is a great atmosphere in the dressing room and we're all looking forward to hitting the ground running come the start of the season."

CEO Gerry Kelly said Connacht were impressed with Roberts' prolific scoring record with his previous clubs, and he is just the calibre of player they have been looking for.

"He is a very strong running, powerful winger and his record is a testament to that," he said. "He was the top try scorer for Glasgow in his first season there and scored a few hat-tricks in his time with Wasps so we're looking forward to him bringing that kind of form to the Sportsground," said the Connacht CE

Load of old Guff in the blurb, he hardly played any games of import for Wasps, apart from a couple of run outs in the Heineken group games against Italian teams, but a quick Google search will tell you it was mostly for their A side before being released.

And he wasn't a member of the Glasgow team for much of last season or the season before (1 game) after signing in season 2004/05 (12 games + 2 as sub = 6 tries).

I really, really hope he does well for us, but I'd still have Trev back by choice or ....

.....and all the talent going to waste in the rest of the provinces, and being drained away into the Guinness Premiership.....

Welcome aboard Mike, hopefully your switch to Connacht will have the desired effect.

Big questionmarks over this signing.I'd be lying if I said I knew who he is but hopefully it will work out but surely we shouldn't be signing Glasgow rejects???

Harsh choice of words there Borders no2.....lets not kid each other Mike doesnt have the pedigree of Doug Howlett but can we a least give the lad a couple of games before writing him off.

I know this seems hypocritical of me in light of my earlier post but, to clarify, my gripe is with us not keeping/signing young Connacht/Irish talent when theres obvious candidates out there who would benefit from a stint with us.

I'd like to wish Mike all the best. Ignore the negative stuff here. These boys should wait until they see you play before they make their minds up.
Hopefully you'll do the business here.

Fair point I was a bit harsh there alright and maybe I should have reserved judgement but looking at the bare statistics its hard not to notice a downward trend in his career.
Also it doesn't exactly help Irish rugby!

However I'd like to wish him the best of luck and I hope I am made to eat my words.

To finish my statement the person following the "or ...." would be Simon Keogh. What he's doing wasting his time at Leinster (unless there is a major injury crisis) I don't know. He's definitely what we need, at 29 an experienced proven finisher (his stats for Quins are good 108 appearances and 43 tries). We could have lost on our fly-halfs for him, that's for sure..

Welcome Mike, a winger, lets not look gift horses in the mouth, like I said A WINGER, havnt seen one of them for a while.

Winger: Also known as wingerous generalus, common mainly in southern hemisphere and richer climates, have been known to migrate to colder areas during winter in search of massive pay days, also a very rare variety to be found impersonating scrumus halfiouses in western Ireland, thought mainly to be caused by infestation bradleus!!

Joking aside he's a winger.Very welcome

It's good to see us sign a winger, and good luck to Mike Roberts.

However why oh why have the Branch sought to over-embellish him?

I Don't know how to do a link thing but if you go to the wasps messageboard(page2 or 3) the feedback seems to be positive on this guy while a comment left on the glasgow supporters site about his departure suggests he is a very committed player so maybe this signing might be a success.
