Match Report
Leeds Rhinos 48 Harlequins 0
Friday 14th March 2008, Headingley Carnegie Stadium.
The Rhinos were still missing Danny McGuire and Clinton Toopi over injury after the World Club Challenge defeat of Melbourne Storm, and hooker Matt Diskin was unable to play for Leeds after a high shot on a Cas player last week at The Jungle earned him a match ban.
So, three places needed to be filled this week and the youngsters formally of the Rhinos academy stepped in and contributed in the nilling of the Quins. Luke Burgess, Ben Kaye and Simon Worrall all made their Headingley Carnegie debuts.
The opening exchanges of the match were dominated by Leeds although it took the side 7 minutes before going over the white line. JJB broke free on the 5 metre line and went over to score after a sensational short flat ball seemed to come from nowhere. Bang under the sticks, Sinny added the extras.
It only took 2 more minutes until the next try for Leeds. It was clear this was going to be a high scoring game.
Buchanan flicked a pass to his right side which found Jamie Peacock who ran 15 metres on the angle, 'fending off defenders on his way, to find the try line just off from the touch line. Sinfield converted making the score 12-0 with only 9 minutes gone, more than a point a minute.
27 minutes had passed before the next try, and of course, it was Leeds again. Senior made a snap pass to Donald on the wing just inside the Rhinos half. As the last defender edged closer to Scott, he passed inside to Tansey who scored on his first touch of the ball - Bluey just brought him on! As we begin to expect, Sinfield added the extras needed, and the score was 18-0.
4 minutes before the break, typical Leeds fancy work led to Luke Burgess passing to Superman-Brent who added another 4 to the score sheet. Sinny found the boot and the Rhinos carried a 24-0 lead into half time.
The half was only 3 minutes old when Scruton broke the 'Quins line on the 20 mark, and wasn't tackled until 3 metres out. The oppositions defender slipped of Scruton's back which therefore enabled Nick to crawl to the line - adding yet further points to the board. Sinfield undoubtedly added the 2 points on offer, making the score 30-0 just into the second half.
Pocket-rocket Burrow scored his 100th try for Leeds next to the sticks after Lauititi and Donald combined in front of the packed Carnegie Terrace. Yet again, super Sinfield converted and finished the Southeners off. 36-0 was the score after 50 minutes.
The penultimate try came from home debuter Luke Burgess: Luke managed to break his hand free of the tackle before hovering it over the line, and then scoring. Guess what - Kev converted to make the scoreboard display 42-0.
With only a second remaining, on his debut for the Rhinos, Ben Kaye ran from dummy half before finding the try line from short range. Sinfield added the extras on offer as the final hooter sounded.
With McGuire, Toopi and Diskin out due to injury and suspension, the young Leeds stars all deserved to be included in Fridays game. Aswell as this, Gareth Ellis, Kevin Sinfield and Jones-Buchanan were all out of position against an opposition who had won 4 out of 5 Super League clashes before this one.
It's now clear that the Rhinos were not hitting bad form after last weeks loss against Cas - on the night, the best team won and although the club say it has nothing to do with it, Leeds were crowned the World Champs just a week earlier.
