Chiefs lose but hold on to 2nd place

Chiefs v Notts
By Geronimo Jim April 7 2008
exeter Chiefs travelled to Nottingham four points clear and in second place. They returned on the same points as their opposition but still in second place on the number of wins. The third encounter between the two sides saw Nottingham triumph for the first time.

Match Review

 Nottingham 24 Chiefs 14

Chiefs v Notts 3

In the past it’s been Exeters’ second half performance that has been criticised by fans. With the game seemingly in the bag the team sometimes appear to “have a rest” and the opposition come storming back. Sundays’ efforts were the exact reverse of this with Nottingham taking the game to the Chiefs with some very effective forward play linked with energetic back play. For fully 55 minutes the Chiefs seemed to have little if any clue as to how to contain a Nottingham side determined to demolish Exeter in the early exchanges and take our season long second place from us.

Chiefs v Notts1

How close they came! With two converted first half tries and a penalty under their belt at the break it seemed highly likely that Exeter would end the weekend in third place in Division 1.

So what was the problem? It was bitterly cold. 1905 fans rattling around in a football stadium made it an odd atmosphere (well done Oggy and the Tribe on your efforts to lift the guys). Eyes on the Prize? With Twickers a week away maybe players were holding back to save themselves from injury).

None of the above hold water with me. It’s been colder. We’ve played in front of far fewer in far worse places. Surely the players should have been playing for a place in next weeks squad?

Chiefs v Notts2

The plain truth is that on the day Nottingham (1-22) were better than Exeters’ starting 15. It wasn’t until the likes of Ward, Johnson, Marsden and Miller joined the fray that the Chiefs finally got into the game and actually had periods in which they managed to dominate. The 14 points scored were probably no more than we deserved but, annoyingly, there were several other opportunities. Had we been more clinical (and to be fair had Nottingham been less aggressive in defence) we could have taken at least a losing bonus point.

Clive SS

On matters other than rugby;

Joke(?) of the day. Name 3 fish beginning with “K” Answer King size Haddock, Killer Shark & Kilmarnock. No it’s not a fish but it is a place! (This shows just how depressed the coach was on the way home – we laughed!)

Our second coach driver displayed jumping skills that would put him in many Div 1 packs. He must have jumped at least four feet into the air from a sitting position. The reason? The exit door swung open suddenly and of its’ own accord at 60 miles an hour; he was sat next to it!

Finally, a word to the whingers. If you feel hard done by at Sandy Park because the corporates have the best of everything, try a visit to Nottingham next season. The “facilities” for the ordinary fan consist of one “bar” selling only lager and “bitter” and the usual burgers, pies & chips. This bar is in the underbelly of the stand and is part of the walk through to the stand – no seats or any other amenities. After the game you have the choice of.... well, you don’t have a choice, if you want a drink and to mix with the local fans you have to walk to the nearest pub! Contrast that with the corporate effort upstairs in the fully stocked and carpeted corporate suites. I salute the regular fans of Nottingham who put up with this to support their club at home. We are very well catered for in comparison.

So depending on whos fit and after the nottingham game, who would you have starting the final vs northampton? If we raise our game, slow down their ball and stop it getting out to their back three we have a real good chance!

Great write up GJ Thanks for giving us a good insite to the game. I would make one change to your team list I would bring in Marden at 14 instead of Luffy as he can't stick pressure see what his play was like at Franklin Gardens(Sm124)

Just to clear up a couple of points. Agreed, the catering facilities are poor, but they are ran by Notts County. We only have the gate receipts, everything else goes to NCFC, part of the ground share deal.

You don't have to go to a local pub, the players and supporters meet in the Meadow Club after the game, which is to the left of the main entrance as you leave the ground.

Just about every team in div 1 would prefer your facilities, with the exception of Saints and Plymouth of course!

Green & White.

I had a conversation with one of your club officials and it was clear that the football club give you as little as possible for as much wonga as possible.

Nobody told a lot of Chiefs fans about the Meadow Bar, otherwise we wouldn't have made our way up the road to the pub (which had it's fair share of Nottingham supporters whos' craic was good).

As for OUR facilities, whingers please note the above.

None of what I said above was intended to be a slur on your club. As I said I admire those of you who turn up every home game.

No offence taken GJ.

Depending on taste, I think the pub was the better option to the Meadow Club, which has the air of a canteen to it. It will be interesting if Notts County get relegated - we might get a stronger bargaining position or a weaker one if they go out of buisness! The joys of ground sharing.

As for the ground itself, if only we had the option of sitting in the sunshine in the stand opposite instead of freezing your nadgers off in the main one. Cost decision apparently.

I asked the question of one of your officials why they don't play County off against Forest with the grounds only a toe punt apart. His response was that Forest may be interested but only if you made it to the Prem. I have to say that as far as the pitch was concerned I was a bit disappointed. I expected a good green surface but the amount of sand on the pitch made those of our supporters that live by the sea feel at home!

One things for certain 2nd or 3rd this year with your current set up certainly does you credit. I know how good it feels as the Chiefs "punched well above their weight" for a while in the old County Ground days.
