Three defeats in four for GP leaders Glaws

Willie Walker - off-targe
By Cherry Picker March 1 2008
Gloucester coach Dean Ryan says that Willie Walker should not be blamed for his team’s 30-25 Guinness Premiership defeat at Harlequins, despite the fact that Walker converted only one of four tries and also missed some penalties. Ryan will possibly be wondering if he should have sent on the world’s best kicker, Chris Paterson, in an effort to make a difference.
Harlequins came back after being behind at half-time, and eventually won the game with a late try. The result means Glaws have lost five times this season – the same number of defeats they suffered throughout last season, yet the squad is supposed to be stronger.
But there had already been chances galore for Glaws to tie the game up and they won the try count four to three.
Ryan told the BBC: "There were lots of opportunities where we should have won the game and we didn't. You can't blame the kicker.
"Our game management wasn't really good enough and we got pulled into a fragmented game which we didn't want.
"We had more control and more opportunities but we lost a little but of clarity about what it is we are trying to do."
There’s no doubting the fact that Glaws failed to get into their rhythm and the broken game suited Quins more, but this is a worrying time of the season. Since pipping Wasps by one point at Kingsholm at the end of January, Glaws have lost three out of four GP matches – and that is NOT table-topping form even allowing for the disruption caused by the Six Nations.
Anthony AllenFirst-half tries from Jake Adams, Iain Balshaw and Anthony Allen (right) gave Glaws the edge 20-17 at the break, and when JSD scored after the break, they looked to be in control.
But those missed kicks gave Quins a chance, and they took it with that late match-winning try.
Fair enough, Willie Walker shouldn’t be expected to carry the can for the result, but the blame has to go somewhere because it was a game Glaws could and should have won.
Now, with one win in four, everybody will be fancying their chances against the team that has set the pace all season – including London Irish, who visit Kingsholm next Saturday night looking for a double after their home success in October. The question is, can Glaws handle the pressure at the top of the table?

The team handling the pressure I worry about, there are plenty of experienced internationals even though they seem to have caught the headless chicken bug that infects Glaws once pressure is applied. There is no one with the dominant personality needed to lead that team they are all similar in terms of leadership but what worries me more is the coaching staff. Sticking with tactics that plainly dont work i.e aimlessly and badly kicking possession away even though Glaws have arguably the most attacking 3/4 line in the GP coupled with a lineout that has not functioned all season yet seemingly has not been worked on are my two biggest gripes. I seem to be moaning about the same thing every week but thats because Glaws do not change anything, everyone can see the problems yet Glaws stumble on from one disappointment to the next hoping that somehow things will improve by themselves. How Glaws are still top of the GP Lord only knows but im sure of one thing and that is every team playing Glaws will fancy their chances right now and its easy to see why.

WW gave Quins the chance they needed - Quins deserve and got the credit for taking the opportunity.
Glaws could and maybe should have won but the unforced error count went against them and the attitude of a very young team finally finding it feet can and was yesterday hard to resist

on on quins

Im not picking on WW because plenty of other players and parts of Glaws' game were poor again yesterday. Maybe its a reality check for all connected with Glaws and its all a bit of a shock.

Woke up for the second morning running today still extremely hacked off. I usually move on when results go against us, but Saturday is just one too many in the same style.

Thats it in a nutshell. Not so much losing, though thats bad enough, its losing while repeating the same errors with a gameplan with the same flaws. Glaws are so close to being a really really good side but right now they are displaying midtable form at best and the time to sort it is rapidly running out. Irish will be a proper test Saturday and can see them winning if Glaws play the same way they did for the second half against Quins.

Trouble is, Glaws are inconsistent - not just from game to game, but during games as well.

Thats true. The last few seasons Glaws would have a flat twenty minutes eitherside of/ before/after/ halftime but now it comes and goes in spells. They can struggle to contain opponents for a few minutes then score two tries in ten minutes and look devastating before struggling again and conceding stupid penalties and soft tries.

I personally make Oirish favourites. Seems to be inform team playing out of form team. I fancied Quins to win last week and I think Oirish will win by quite a margin if Glaws have not sorted the lineout coz Kennedy and Casey will murder them.
