It was an expensive mistake for Glaws, who have got next to nothing out of a player who will have cost them a lot of money by the time he is paid up. 
Ryan says there will be no panic signing to replace Paul, who played only one Premiership game for Glaws in his one season at Kingsholm.
Hooking duties will be split between Andy Titterrell and Olivier Azam.
Meanwhile, it looks as if Olly Barklay (right) could miss the start of the GP season because of a broken bone in his wrist, an injury he recived playing for England in New Zealand in June.
He told the Citizen: "The first few games are unlikely at the moment because of my wrist. The second game is obviously Bath at the Rec so we will see about that one, but I think I will miss the first two or three games at the moment.
"That gives me more of a chance to get some conditioning in because I'm a couple of weeks behind where the boys are at the moment.

"But Bath at the Rec and Bath at Kingsholm are the two games I'm looking forward to most because your playing against your former teammates and friends so it's a definite incentive."

Paul’s failure to adapt to English club rugby must be frustrating for Ryan, who also admits he is frustrated by Cardiff’s decision to cancel the pre-season friendly between the clubs.
The game was due to be played at Kingsholm on August 22, but it was called off by the Blues, apparently because the clubs are paired in the Heineken Cup.
Ryan told the Citizen: "I don't see any reason. We had an organised pre-season which was left very late for someone within the Blues management to drop the fixture.
"I'm disappointed, given we are not playing Heineken Cup until a considerable way into the season and I don't see what we would have found out in August that we won't know through watching games.
"I don't subscribe to the fact we shouldn't play because we are in the same Heineken Cup group - otherwise we shouldn't play anyone.”
Glaws will now play Bayonne in France, but before that they are off to Canada at the weekend for a training camp which ends with a match against Canada A in Toronto.
Ryan added: "We've been to a very good training place in Portugal for the last two years - but you do the same thing once too often and it loses its value.
"Part of the pre-season trip is to get everyone together and get away from home life and get a lot of work done in quite an intense environment.
"We've got an opportunity for a game which is central to us travelling there.
"It's quite early for us but given the ELVs it's an early chance for us to try some things away from the scrutiny of others."
