The Harlequin Amateur Rugby Football Club has grown in strength since it was re-established four years ago to uphold the founding principles of amateur social rugby that had always been played at The Stoop. Below, Coach Hillary Carr discusses the objectives and developments for 2004/5.

Ross Webster will skipper the Amateurs for the season 2004/5. He first played at Harlequins at U19 level in 1994/5, and then captained Staffordshire University from1996 to 2000 representing Midlands Universities in the1999/00 season. Matt Stevens is appointed Vice Captain. Matt joined Quins also with the U19 squad before switching to the Amateurs two seasons ago. Phil Thompson, who was voted Amateurs Player of the Season 2003/4, will deputise as Vice Captain in the absence of Matt or Ross.

Andrew Robinson remains the overall Amateurs Club Captain and Tom Cooper will captain The Wanderers for the forthcoming season.

We firmly believe that this strong, established leadership on and off pitch will generate greater cohesion throughout the whole squad.

A restructuring of the divisional leagues means that next season Harlequins Amateurs will be playing in Herts & Middx League 2 South. (See the fixtures table for a list of our league dates and our opponents) and our mission is to gain promotion and to win the league outright.

We have the club structure in place, the ongoing support of the professional club and extensive use of the facilities - we will play a minimum of 5 home fixtures at The Stoop Memorial Ground, home of the NEC Harlequins - now we need to add to the playing strength.

Squad pre-season training will be on Wednesday evenings between 7.30pm - 9.00pm, commencing 14th July, and on Saturday afternoon from1.00pm - 3.00pm on the training area behind the East Stand at the Stoop Memorial Ground. Training during the season is Wednesday evenings with matches on Saturday afternoons. Our first fixture will be a friendly on 4th September against London Irish prior to the 'double header' Zurich Premiership match at Twickenham.

There will be a social event after training on Saturday 31st July to welcome all new recruits and to introduce them to the rest of the squad.
