The Last Tycoons – Saints Away at Newbury
beside the (not quite upright) uprights. Smyler converted and… (why not our Bruza? I hear you ask – because he was on the wing and Smyler needs game time), we anticipate a rout. Les chapeaux sur des roues?
third try was a gem… multiple phases, left, right, left, right – with military precision – until Ashton flashes out of phase five to put Ansbro into space. Joe doesn’t need too much encouragement and, swiveling his hips like a flamenco artist in a hurry, he slides past defenders and touches down near enough for Smyler to convert.
Saints from their torpor and it was Ben Lewitt, anticipating a contract for next season, who put Saints even further ahead with the fifth try of the afternoon. Newbury just wouldn’t lie down, though and earned their own, fully deserved try bonus, with a well-worked try by centre, Andy Reay.
t is hard to pick a man of the Match after such a patchy performance, but Brake certainly caught the eye as did the back row of Easter, Lewitt and Hopley. The front row was awesome and Ashton could have taken at least two more tries if he had been a little more selfish. Newbury’s fly-half and skipper Tim Walsh starred for the home team.
