Robbie Kydd set to leave the Saints
By St Marlowe July 19 2008
Following speculation on this board yesterday, it became clear that Robbie Kydd is set to leave the Saints, discussions taking place on the final year of his contract. In spite of a "No comment" from the Saints communications department, it is clear that Robbie does not form part of the coaches plans for the return to the Premiership.

Robbie Kydd set to leave the Saints

It is understood that Robbie Kydd is in discussion with the club over the remaining year on his contract. Since being brought from Saracens to the Saints by Budge Pountney he has suffered from a string of injuries that have prevented him from playing. Indeed his first year was spent recovering from a knee injury which was potentially career threatening.  He is a fighter though, and having regained his fitness put in a string of sparkling performances in the centre,  and built up an enviable try scoring rate, before an injury once again cut short his progress, this time an ankle. Rehabilitaion was slow, and he appeared at the end of last season to play in the "A" league final. He will be best remembered by supporters for his breakaway try in 2007 against Biarritz in San Sebastian, which put Saints through to the Heineken Cup Semi-Final, and broke the hearts of the incredulous Biarrots.

The editors of this board wish Robbie all the best in his future career.

Sacking/trying to sack a player because he is injured.... Nice. What is happening at my club?

I don't think it's quite that simple Choppa.

Please elaborate for me then, O great one, because that's how it looks to me and several other Saints supporters I know.

What makes you think he is injured? He played the last two games of the season - probably the two toughest games of said season.

Heh, sorry dude. It's just this, added to the Sharky thing, added to something very disturbing (and libellous) I heard about the JvN thing, has really got my goat.

Thats fine, I appreciate that. I'm as disappointed as anyone to see RK go. But as OSB said, what makes you think he is injured, he certainly wasn't at the end of the season.

St Marlowe's piece states;

To me that means Jim doesn't see a place for Robbie within his plans (this could be due to a whole variety of reasons and to be honest I don't know so I don't want to speculate) both sides are attempting to agree the most favourable terms in the parting of company.

RK will not be released without some form of consideration from the club. I'm pretty sure he will have people knocking on his door.

Of course, it's plausable that it is Robbie who is seeking this release to move on to pastures new, as opposed to the club.

Apologies if I have my wires crossed here - are we sure Robbie played in the last game of the season?

Unless my eyes were deceiving me, I don't think we played in this kit last season. This is Robbie Kydd walking towards me in front of the south stand at half time of the last match of the season...

Anyway, good luck Robbie and thanks for the memories (oh yes and that photo!).

Last games were the Wanderers games Claire. He played in those.

Good luck Robbie by the way.

Just remember accusations that people have been sacked when they may well not have might be viewed as libel too.

Sharky's contract was up but didn't sign a new contract. Apparently it wasn't worth as much as the old one etc etc.

It's what happens in professional sport players and clubs part ways at various stages - usually at the ends of contracts. But heigh-ho, let's read something more into it.

Personally I feel that, until it has been officially announced a player is leaving and those reasons behind that, it is unfair to the player and the club to start dreaming up/speculating reasons why he is leaving. No doubt there are discussions going on behind the scenes that will favour both parties involved and to be honest I don't think we will ever know the reasons why most players leave.

andysaint, is that part of the point... Regardless of who it is, this appears to have been officially announced via the 'back door', ie stuck at the bottom of a squad profile where many won't notice it.

Hmmm good point. I hope from the Saints and Kydd's perspective that is an error and that shouldn't have been on there so quick. I would hope to see a quick withdraw of it on Monday or a swift public announcement. If not poor form from the Saints.

At the end of the day I think it's a real loss as when fit he provided good competition for places within the squad and is a good Premiership class player. But like I said above I highly doubt we will know the real reason for his leaving during his contract and speculation rarely gets anyone anywhere.

The Sharky thing is just my personal beef with that particular deal. I don't see why we let a player go when:

- he was well on course to becoming a true Saintsman
- we have no experienced replacement lined up (Foden is a 15 by nature)
- his passion for the jersey could never be questioned
- he has since signed for Wasps - insult to injury

As I say, it's just something personal. Guess I've got to live with it but it don't mean I like it.

foden is not a 15 by nature, he only played there last season!
he has played at scrum half at all age groups.

the sharky issue is not an issue. we all know he was a favourite and there are many rumours to why he is not here. the bottom line is he did not feature in the eyes of our new management. until we start the new season and have a few games under the belt we can not judge if it was a good idea or not until we have done this.

The problem was that you made your personal thoughts sound as if its real and common knowledge yet true facts when it was only your personal opinion.

No one is saying good riddance, people you will find will say that saints will miss sharky. but you will also find out that they will also say we are in a new era and you have to plan for the future. we haven't shoved anyone inexperienced into the limelight. all have premiership experience (bar ashton, but we already had him) and bottom line you will find that people actually trust the coach's judgement on the matter at hand.

experienced replacement...

alan dickens aged 32 must signal some kind of experience.

The club has made its statement to this publisher - "No Comment" - whether that was what they told the Chron remains to be seen.

What is happening at the Saints and at every other profesional rugby club is no different whatever from the norm in football. Every close season clubs issue "retained" lists leaving some players with no contract for the next season. Even some of the retained list are only on it because they still have a current contract, not necessarily because the management wants to keep them, and frequently they get the message and move on. It is absolutely normal and inevitable in professional sport. Yes the fans get upset if their favourite leaves, but we have to trust the coaches, and provided a contract is terminated in a manner which is fair to both sides then we should accept it and move on, which is exactly what a professional player would do.

As far as RK is concerned there might well be a valid complaint about the way the club has handled it in public, but in general it must use its discretion as to if and how it informs us.

i actually have no grouse with a decision to invoke a fitness clause, if that is what has happened. unfortunately these clauses have a purpose , and the decision is often unilateral in nature.

i also suspect our friend the barfly , while not his own master, of having an instinct which veers towards openness.

this, i think , is quite important. if you try to bottle up and control awareness of events in a small environment like northampton, where saints are the main sports story , it will almost always come back to bite you in the bum.

by being reasonably open, management has the opportunity to nudge the ensuing debate in a preferred direction.

Ah Mr brroon but total openness would totally eliminate the need for any debate. Totally.

ah stockers, nobody running a business or any form of governmental function or indeed practically any organisation at all would ever deal in total openness.

Ah Stockers I'm sure that wouldn't stop some people. Such as....

"what's all this total honesty coming out of the club now ?? What's it all about eh ? Something seriously wrong there I'd say "

Bath supporters think he's returning to the Rec.
If he is leaving and this turns out to be true, hes following Sharkeys example and signing for a club that finished in the top 4 last season. Not a bad outcome for him!

I wish him as much luck as i would wish any Saint moving on. Our coaches don't appear to see a place for him and that's good enough for me.

I have followed the Robbie story since early April-nuff said
About a week ago I looked at his profile on the club website and was not totally suprised to read that "He left the club during the summer"
I am therefore a bit suprised at the "No comment" response

agreed tim, i have noticed lately that any topic that has a link attached to it...appears in the chron the next day!

Example - the Fijian winger story.

great journalism there!

i was surprised to see that 2 articles that appeared in thehard copy last week did not appear on the website.

One was about bruce and his "small" sized shirt with comments from a rhino representitive.

the other was about a local touch league being run by the club.

so if the scout from the chron is watching.... i'll expect them online in the next day or so...

Apt choice of words there David. For many years the Chron's rugby reports were written by The Scout.
